On the occasion of Shivratri, Mandir Samiti sources have announced that the portals of Kedarnath will be thrown open to pilgrims and visitors on May 11 at 7 AM after nearly a six months winter break. The auspicious date and time of temple reopening is fixed by Rawal (priest) of the temple Bhima Shankar Ling. Like always, the temple opening date is announced on the occasion of Maha Shivratri and the closing date on Bhai Dooj.
During the winter season, when the Kedarnath temple remains closed due to snowbound conditions in the area, the idol of Kedarnath is taken out in an elaborate procession to Omkareshwar Temple in Rudraprayag district. The deity will be worshiped in Omkareshwar temple till the doors of Kedarnath reopens.
On an average, the temple receives record footfall of 11,755 people. However in 2013, the temple witnessed a massive deluge in footfall due to flash floods in the Mandakini River. Gangotri, Yamunotri, Badrinath along with Kedarnath forms the Chota Char Dham, are also set to reopen in May. Gangotri and Yamunotri are also scheduled to resume on May 9, and Badrinath will be thrown open to devotees on May 11.
